In the later part of 1980s Bangiya Shaksharta Prasar Samiti  a mass organization and pioneer in the promotion of adult literacystarted it’s successful journey. Vidyasagar Foundation (VF) was born out of this movement at the turn of 21^st century.

VF is involved in –

1. Literacy and Education of women through self-help groups
2. Alternative innovative education for children to encourage them to join  mainstream education  in schools and also preventing school drop outs
3. Promoting research on Vidyasagar’s monumental work and his life

Aims and objectives –

1. To carry on and provide educational institutions, vocational training centers and social and humanitarian services to the economically needed people, irrespective of caste, religion, language and gender.
2. To organize informal and non-conventional education centers for adult population in general and poorer section of population in particular.
3. To establish and run institutions for research work on socio economic life, education, health, environment of rural and urban people
4. To publish books, periodicals and other publications for social welfare and development.
5. To promote and conduct co-operatives activities among women population in particular to enhance self-help movement.
6. To conduct all type of vocational courses, agriculture, aquaculture, animal husbandry, bee-keeping, handicraft etc. for the betterment of people living under poverty.
7. To establish and run clinics, dispensaries, hospital for the rural people and also for providing aid in health care.
8. To promote special programmes for welfare of the women and children.

As a  non-governmental non-profit organization Vidyasagar Foundation has followed the path and principles of Vidyasagar promoting social welfare by way of advancing education for girls in following ways :

1. Establishing residential girls’ school (Vidyasagar Abasik Balika Vidyalaya) from class V to XII near Purulia, West Bengal where girls from economically challenged families get preference and students are groomed to be self-reliant. The institution itself follows the path of economical self-reliance through various means like Lakhshya cultivation on trees in the campus, dairy and poultry farming, fishery etc.
2. Establishing day school for girls from class 1 to IV.
3. Founding Teachers’ Training College for women
4. Conducting vocational and non-conventional courses
