Philosophy
In a society where the girl child is still a victim of discrimination, where women’s literacy is low, where the female dropout rate from schools is high and where childhood marriage is still continuing we cannot afford to put Vidyasagar on a museum pedestal and court oblivion.We shall have to invoke him every moment. The work he began more than a century and a half ago in instilling self-confidence in women and giving them a sense of freedom has been bequeathed to us, and unless we prove worthy of that legacy we shall have no pardon from the posterity.
Rammohan had cut the path, Derozio had added colour to it, but it was Vidyasagar who had given it its shape and direction – he had been our greatest architect of education. At the same time he had been our greatest emblem for love and kindness to be borne to fellow human beings.
History
Vidyasagar Foundation for Education, Research, Development and Social Services, a non-profit- making voluntary organization registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act of 1961. The Foundation believes in grassroots level education as an instrument of knowledge and freedom cannot afford to alienate. It must integrate.
